Rare collectible display made from part of HMS Victory as part of the 100th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar made from original copper sheet from the hull of HMS victory herself. The British made a technical breakthrough during the golden age of sale when they began to cover the hull of warships with copper plate sheathing. This gave British ships an advantage in speed over French and Spanish ships of the period who did not copper plate their hulls. The copper performed very well, both in protecting the hull from worm invasion and in preventing weed growth for, when in contact with water, the copper produced a poisonous film, composed mainly of copper oxychloride, that deterred these marine organisms. Interesting piece of history and a great conversation piece for the home or office, would make a great gift for anyone interested in the Royal Navy or ships.
