RARE 17th / 18th Century Tobacco Box & Tampers Carved Compendium. This is an extraordinary & extremely early folk art tobacco smokers compendium. The set is carved from mutton or beef bone on a wood base & consists of the following.A figural carved box, the base with bearded men & an eagle with'VOIS' carved. The lid is a laurel wreath with 4 standing figures. A pair of figural carved lids, the wooden base forming the hollowed out box. 3 figural tampers depicted kneeling & seated, 1 holding a bird above his head - Height 4cm approx.
This is very obviously an extremely rare artifact from the early period after the introduction of tobacco into Europe. The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners. Base Width 11cm x 7.5c.
